Wheel Chair Accessible Barrier Free Curbless Shower

We were contacted by a customer who needed a roll in shower for a family member who was going to be moving in with them who is in a wheel chair. Originally the idea was to renovate a secondary bathroom, however Chris also wanted her master bathroom remodeled as it was out dated and not as functional as she liked.

A few discussions took place and we explained that there were different types of handicapped accessible showers that we could build, from the utilitarian that function specifically as an accessible shower, all the way to the other end of the spectrum where we can build a shower that is multi-purpose in design. Our multi-purpose showers can function in many ways and combine elements such as roll in ability while not appearing to be purposely built just for handicapped use.

We soon discovered that we could remodel just the master bathroom alone instead of two bathrooms at the same time and save Chris quite a bit of money. We would build a multi-purpose shower that would serve as a spa-like oasis for Chris, yet at the same time could be handi-capped / wheel chair accessible for her sister-in-law.

The solution required a total redesign of the existing master bathroom layout. The bathtub area became the new accessible shower, the old 36"x36" shower became a linen closet.

Just because we are building a hand-capped accessible shower, does not mean we have to build it so that it looks institutional. Instead we can incorporate beautiful design, elegant tile and functional elements that will allow the shower to work both as a spa like showering experience and be fully accessible.

This shower has a total of 8 water elements incorporated into it, mixing a spa experience with function showering items that are handi-capped compatible. This picture shows the four body sprays and double shower heads

A velocity rainmaker shower head is located above the over-sized shower bench seat. The shower head is strategically located so it can be used while being either seated on the bench or standing directly below it.

An additional rail mounted hand sprayer finishes the water elements. The combined eight water features give a full shower experience from spa like to handicapped accessible.

This close-up picture of the floor shows how we were able to create a barrier free no curb shower so that a wheel chair can roll right in to the shower. The oversized bench in the corner of the shower was specially designed to be taller and wider than normal making transferring easy from the wheel chair to the bench.
