Jetted or Whirlpool Bathtubs

A whirlpool tub is high on the list of desired upgrades for many of our customers. Whirlpool tubs are not only excellent upgrades and will add lots of resale value to a house, but are also a wonderful addition to a master bathroom for relaxation and go a long way in creating that self-indulgent home spa. However, in regard to your budget and design, you need to consider that there is more to the cost of a whirlpool tub than just the cost of the tub and the installation.

Things you should know:

Design considerations:

  • Corner tubs take up just as much room if not more in a bathroom then a straight tub.

  • Whirlpool tubs have a pump(s) that must be accessible incase of service or replacement. This can effect design and budget since access panels must be built into the project. Also there is no consistent location for pumps between manufacturers, some locate them in the front, some on the sides, so you must take into consideration the room and access as well as the models you are considering.

  • Custom framing is required to build what is called the ‘tub deck ’and takes up much more room than the standard bathtub they are replacing.

  • White is the easiest color to keep clean, with black being the hardest and shows off water spots readily.

Cost considerations:

  • Whirlpool tubs usually require 2 new 20 amp GFCI circuits to be ran to the bathroom. One for the pump(s) and one for the inline heater.

  • Not all electrical services (your breaker box) have capacity for 2 additional circuits. The new circuits may cause you to have to upgrade your electrical service panel.

  • Whirlpool tubs are generally bigger than the bathtub they are replacing and require more gallons of hot water to fill. This often leads to a upgrade of the existing hot water heater or the more better idea, the addition of a 2nd one which can yield many more benefits one of which is never being without hot water when one eventually needs to be replaced.

  •  Along with requiring extra water to fill, it also takes much longer to fill them. Upgrade to 3/4 inch plumbing feeding the tub from the existing standard 1/2 inch plumbing is a desirable option for some people and a requirement for others.

  •  Increase in utility bills - a small increase of electrical usage for pumps and inline heater as well as more water usage.

  •  Whirlpool tubs are usually not a stand alone product such as the tub they are replacing. Custom framing and decking is require as most whirlpools are drop-in models.

  • Most people will find the convenience of a hand spray a desired feature for cleaning a whirlpool tub after use.
